review policy / for publishers + authors

If you're a publisher person or an author-type, hi! Thanks for stopping by my little corner of the internet and visiting this particular page: it means a lot. If you'd like a list of links to book reviews I've previously written, please visit the My Bookshelf page. If you'd like to read my review policy, do read on. :)

I'm open to reviewing any book that complies with my review policy. If, for reasons beyond my control, I cannot accept your review request even though it complies with the review policy, I hope you will understand.

While I discuss a lot of books from different genres on my blog, I reserve the right to only accept certain genres for review. Generally, I will review any book in these genres: young adult or middle-grade science-fiction, dystopian, contemporary or historical and adult historical. I am not interested in reviewing books in these genres: horror, paranormal, erotica, or romance (either heterosexual or homosexual).

I do accept Advance Reader Copies (ARCs) in either electronic or physical format. I am also open to involvement in book tours, author interviews, etc.

I am open to accepting review requests from indie authors and publishers. However, please make sure your book is professionally edited/formatted before requesting a review. I do not mean to discriminate against your book, only to say reading books that have consistent editing or formatting errors is not enjoyable for me and will not result in a positive review for you.

I will try to review any books I receive within two to five weeks of reading them. If there is a specific date you would like your book to be reviewed by, please specify in your review request. I may not review every book I receive on my blog, but I will review every book I receive on Goodreads.

I write honest book reviews. This means, sometimes, I will write a negative book review. Generally, my book reviews follow this format: a short quote from the book; an opening paragraph consisting of my initial thoughts, a brief what-the-book-is-about, and from where I got the book (this is where I would state that I received the book in exchange for a review from the author/publisher); one or two paragraphs stating what I liked and/or disliked about the book (sometimes these are in list format); a closing paragraph consisting of my star rating and a recommendation to readers. I determine whether I liked a book or not according to its characters (their variety, development, relatability), plot (its pacing, flow, predictability, uniqueness, elements), and whether or not the story met my expectations. If I think the book has any excessive violent, sexual, dark or swearing content, I may reference it in my review for cautious readers.

I rate all books I review on a scale from 1 to 5 stars. Sometimes, I may use half stars (i.e. 3.5, 4.5). A rating of 1, 1.5, or 2 stars means I did not like the book and possibly did not finish it. A rating of 2.5 or 3 stars means I thought the book was average and had a even amount of likes and dislikes. A rating of 3.5 or 4 stars means I liked the book a lot and would happily recommend it. A rating of 4.5 or 5 stars means I absolutely loved the book and have A LOT of good things to say about it.
